Using Your FSA or HSA
Did you know your KickIt adaptive clothing may be eligible for purchase using your FSA (Flexible Spending Account) or HSA (Health Savings Account)?
FSA and HSA
What are FSAs and HSAs?
FSAs and HSAs are special healthcare savings accounts that let you set aside pre-tax dollars to pay for qualified medical expenses.
If you’re unfamiliar with these terms, here’s a brief breakdown:
- FSA (Flexible Spending Account):
Typically provided by employers, FSAs also let you set aside pre-tax dollars for healthcare costs. However, most FSAs are “use-it-or-lose-it,” meaning you need to spend your funds within your plan year. - HSA (Health Savings Account):
A personal savings account where you can set aside pre-tax dollars specifically for medical expenses. Available to individuals with high-deductible health plans, HSA funds roll over year to year, giving you long-term flexibility.
Both accounts are designed to help you manage health-related expenses, giving you more control and peace of mind over your healthcare spending.

What is Burst?
Burst is a platform that helps you unlock tax-free savings on health and wellness purchases. Burst makes it effortless to get reimbursed using your HSA or FSA, even after you've paid out of pocket.
How does Burst work?
Buy KickIt products as usual: credit card, PayPal, Shop Pay, whatever you prefer.
After checkout, you'll receive an email from Burst with an option to request a free LMN (Letter of Medical Necessity) through Burst.
Complete a short health questionnaire.
A licensed provider reviews your case and, if approved, signs your LMN.
Burst then prepares and submits your reimbursement automatically so your funds are returned directly to your account.
Can I use my FSA or HSA card at KickIt?
We do not recommend attempting to checkout with your HSA/FSA cards for compliance purposes. We strongly encourage simply transacting with your normal credit or debit card, and submitting for reimbursement as outlined above for the greatest likelihood of success.
What if I don't have my HSA or FSA card?
No problem. Just pay as usual (credit card, debit, PayPal, etc.) and Burst helps you get reimbursed after the fact, directly back to your personal account.
What if I don't have enough funds in my HSA/FSA account?
You can still use Burst. If your account doesn't have enough to cover the full reimbursement, your provider may issue a partial reimbursement based on your available balance.
How much can I save?
Every dollar you reimburse with pre-tax HSA/FSA funds saves you up to 40%, depending on your income tax bracket. It's one of the most powerful ways to make your recovery purchases go further.
Can I use Burst for a past KickIt purchase?
You can only apply your HSA/FSA funds to KickIt purchases beginning on or after the date of your Letter of Medical Necessity.
Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)
What is a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)?
A Letter of Medical Necessity is a written statement from a licensed healthcare provider explaining:
- The medical condition or procedure
- Why a specific product is necessary for treatment or recovery
- The length of time the product is needed
Many benefits administrators require an LMN to approve reimbursement for items that are not automatically considered medical expenses. We offer this letter post checkout through our partner Burst.
How do I submit an LMN for reimbursement?
We can submit this information for you through our partner, Burst. After checkout, you will receive an short questionnaire. Please complete to receive your LMN and reimbursement. The questionnaire must be received back the same day of your purchase.
While exact steps vary by plan, the general process is:
- Contact your benefits administrator to confirm requirements
- Ask your medical provider to complete either your administrator’s official LMN form or a general LMN letter
- Purchase the recovery garment
- Submit the LMN and itemized receipt for reimbursement
Where can I find an LMN?
We will do this for you after checkout through BURST.
Can I use my FSA or HSA to purchase KickIt recovery garments?
Most likely! Many HSA/FSA administrators reimburse recovery garments with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed medical provider. We can do this for you post checkout with a short survey.
Our recovery-focused products include:
- Hospital Gowns with Snaps
- Robe
- Hospital Pajamas
- Recovery Pajamas (short and long sleeve)
- Recovery Set
- Recovery Tank Top
- Color Block Shirt with Drain Pockets
- Kristin Recovery Sash Dress
- Socks
These items are designed with front-open or accessible designs and internal pockets to hold post-surgical drains, which may be considered medically necessary during post-operative recovery depending on your procedure and provider recommendation.
Eligibility is ultimately determined by your benefits administrator, not by us.
Can I get a Letter of Medical Necessity from my own doctor?
Yes. If you already have an LMN from your provider, you can still submit it to your HSA/FSA administrator yourself. But Burst makes it easier, our providers review your case and we file the paperwork for you, automatically.
Can I use a Letter of Medical Necessity I already have?
Yes. If you already have a valid Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) from a licensed healthcare provider, you can upload it directly to Burst. There's no need to request another one.
Once uploaded, Burst can begin the reimbursement process right away so you can get your funds back faster.
If your letter is more than 12 months old, you may need a renewal, which Burst can handle for free.
Qualifying as a Medical Expense
Why might recovery garments qualify as a medical expense?
HSA/FSA funds can generally be used for expenses whose primary purpose is medical care, including treating or supporting recovery from surgery.
In some cases, recovery garments may be considered medically necessary because they:
- Allow safe access to surgical sites without excessive movement
- Reduce strain or risk of disrupting incisions
- Secure post-surgical drains internally, improving mobility and hygiene
- Support compliance with post-operative care instructions
Because these garments also have everyday uses, they are not automatically eligible—but they may qualify with documentation.
Does this guarantee reimbursement?
No. Approval depends on:
- Your specific HSA/FSA plan
- Your medical provider’s determination
- Your administrator’s eligibility rules
We cannot guarantee reimbursement, but we’re happy to provide documentation and product descriptions to support your request.
Do I need a prescription?
Sometimes. Certain items may require a doctor’s note or letter of medical necessity.
Which KickIt products qualify for coverage?
All of our hospital wear and recovery wear feature medical functionality that typically qualify for HSA/FSA, such as designs that address mobility, dexterity and/or living challenges.
However, coverage depends on your insurance company and the Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).
